A Tradition: The Member In Training (MIT) Overnighter Weekend
In 2020 the COSAR team had to postpone a time-honoured tradition due to COVID-19: an overnight team-building event that involves our new recruits and veteran members. We spend an entire weekend out in the backcountry testing our navigation, shelter building, tracking, first aid skills and more. It also involves an overnight mock search and rescue scenario, where new members camp out in the wilderness, surviving only on what they bring in their 24-hour pack. They must also search for and keep their “patient” (a veteran member pretending to be injured) alive until morning.
This year, the Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club generously provided the location for this event (www.kelownanordic.com).
At the closing ceremony at the end of our weekend we awarded members for their various accomplishments and there were many businesses in the Okanagan that donated amazing prizes!
Today we would like to thank Max and everyone at Kelowna Honda Powerhouse for the donation of some pretty awesome Klim jerseys! They sell new and pre-owned powersport vehicles and provide parts, service and accessories. Visit them at 858 McCurdy Place in Kelowna, or www.kelownapowersports.com.
Thank you also to Ardor Exploration Mining Group, who donated an MEC Gift card as a prize! Ardor mining provides a diverse range of services, from residential blasting to large earth moving projects. They are your one-stop shop for all your mining related needs. Visit their website at www.ardormining.com or call 778-699-2074.
Team building training like the Overnighter helps COSAR members to be better prepared and equipped to assist our community in times of crisis.
